Richard DeGroot, age 89, of Prinsburg, died Thursday morning, January 15, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Services will be held at 11 A.M., Saturday, January 17, at First Christian Reformed Church in Prinsburg. Friends may call from 5-7 P.M Friday at the First Christian Reformed Church and 1 hour prior to the services on Saturday. The family request memorials to the Central Minnesota Christian School in Prinsburg. Arrangements are with the Tri-County Funeral Home in Prinsburg. Richard DeGroot was born on February 2, 1925, on the family farm southwest of Prinsburg, the son on Minnie (Allspach) and Henry DeGroot. He grew up in that area and received his education in a one room country school. On January 12, 1945, he was married to Vivian Lorraine Wieberdink at Vivian's parents home and they made their home on his family farm. They lived and farmed there for over 40 years and moved into Prinsburg after his retirement in 1985. Richard was a former member of Emden Christian Reformed Church in Renville and a present member of First Christian Reformed Church in Prinsburg. He was an active member in both churches, had served as an Elder in both churches, was a member of the Men's Bible Study and served on the board of the Tri-County Funeral Home for several years. Richard loved being with family and friends and always enjoyed the time he spent farming. He enjoyed bowling, golf, playing cards, gardening, lawn care and doing jigsaw puzzles. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Vivian DeGroot of Prinsburg and 4 daughters; Yvonne (and Bud) DeJong of Byron Center, MI, Jacqueline Skinner Van Essen (and Larry Van Essen) of Newton, IA, Shirley (and Darrel) Ulferts of Edgerton and Roxanne Krosschell of Rochester. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and 1 sister, Dena (and Garrit) Link of Renville. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister Florence Nieuwbeerta, 2 brothers; Lewis and Edward DeGroot.
