Melvin was born on November 12, 1923, the son of Frank and Mattie (Ledeboer) Marcus on the farm near Prinsburg. He was baptized and made his profession of faith at Prinsburg Christian Reformed Church. He attended Prinsburg Christian School through the 8th grade. He then worked on the family farm until he met and married Elaine Ammermann June 4, 1947. They farmed west of Prinsburg for many years. Following that he worked at Willmar Manufacturing for 11 years. He was a member of the First Prinsburg CRC which he faithfully attended. He was still attending a church bible study just prior to passing.
Mel was quite the jokster and enjoyed visiting with anyone he came in contact with. He loved reminiscing and sharing stories from his childhood. Tinkering and especially working with metal was something he enjoyed. Other past times were fishing, spending time with grandchildren and great grandchildren, watching wheel of fortune and other game shows, as well as watching Billy Graham. He loved his Alllis Chalmers tractors and enjoyed driving them occasionally in parades. In later years he cherished time with buddies playing Rook a few times each week.
Melvin is survived by his two sons Lowell (Marilyn) Marcus of Willmar and Dan (Liz) Marcus of Clara City; grandchildren: Tessa (Lance) Erickson, Jeremy (Rachel) Marcus, Jodi Marcus (friend Ben Asche), Ryan (Alyssa) Marcus, Nick (Christina) Marcus; Great grandchildren: Grant Erickson, Caden Erickson, Janessa Erickson, Austin Marcus, Jay (Kaylee) Marcus, Brayden Marcus, Remmington Marcus, Dallas Marcus, Elijah Marquardt, Mattea Marquardt, Connor Marcus Teagan Marcus, Beau Marcus and Reagan Marcus. Also surviving are one sister, Henrietta Swart and a sister-in-law, Serena Marcus.
Preceding him in death were his parents Frank and Mattie Marcus; his wife, Elaine in 2015; ten siblings, Alice LeCoq, Dick Marcus, Hermina Henderson, Sarah Stob, Herman Marcus, Alfred Marcus, Gerdina Stryker, Florence Tebben, Grace Sportel and Albert Marcus; and a daughter-in-law, Janet Marcus.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the nursing and hospice staff at Cura for their excellent care, and to the Pastors Timmer and Nelson for their support.
