Luverne “Vern” Roy Kleinhuizen, age 89, of Willmar, passed away Tuesday morning, May 19, at Bethesda Grand in Willmar.
A public graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 1, at the Holland Township Cemetery in Prinsburg. Memorials are preferred to Rice Hospice, Central Minnesota Christian School or the Rock of Life Church. Arrangements are with the Tri-County Funeral Home in Prinsburg. www.tricountyfuneral.com
Luverne “Vern” Roy Kleinhuizen was born on August 3, 1930, on the family farm near Prinsburg, the son of Harold and Irene (Poelstra) Kleinhuizen. He was baptized and professed his faith at the First Christian Reformed Church in Prinsburg. Vern grew up and attended school at District #38 in Atwater and the Prinsburg Christian School and then began working on the family farm. From 1951 to 1953, Vern served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. On July 16, 1954, Vern was united in marriage to Beatrice Ledeboer and to this union they were blessed with five children. They lived in Prinsburg and the Renville area until 1966, when they moved into Willmar. Vern worked road construction for Berghuis Construction and later in over the road trucking, retiring after 28 years from Midwest Trucking. Following his retirement, Vern continued with some trucking and working on the farm. Vern has lived the last years at Bethesda Sunrise Village and recently moved to Bethesda Grand where he has received excellent care. He enjoyed camping, fishing, deer hunting, bowling, playing cards and most of all spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Vern was a member of the Rock of Life Church in Willmar where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Willmar V.F.W. Post #1639.
He is survived by four children, Deb Kleinhuizen of Willmar, Bruce Kleinhuizen of Kerkhoven, Julie (and Tim) Johnson of Kerkhoven and Carol Wells of St. Cloud; five grandchildren, Sharon Rogers, Susan Nelson, Aaron (and Nicki) Wells, Amber (and Drew) Nielsen and Adrien Wells (and fiancé, Katie Fliehr); and eight great grandchildren, Cyril, Isabelle and Aiden Rogers, Mason and Lindsey Calhoun, Nora and Amelia Wells and Audrey Nielsen. Also surviving are two sisters, Dorothy Blokzyl of Willmar and Eileen Fritz of Waconia; five sisters-in-law, Lois Pollander of Lynden, WA., Lilah Kleinhuizen of Renville, Wanda Kleinhuizen of Willmar, Dorothy Kleinhuizen of Danube, Marilyn Kleinhuizen of Willmar and Evelyn (and Arwi) Van Der Sluijs of the Netherlands, besides many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beatrice in 2018; one daughter, Diane Joy Kleinhuizen; eight brothers, Nick, Junior, Donald, Roger, Wayne, Melvin, Harvey and Wallace; three sisters, Luella Kleinhuizen in infancy, Loretta Mulder and Martha Dunsmore.
