Katie Hoekstra Obituary

Katie Hoekstra lived on this earth from February 7, 1925, to December 22, 2013. She trusted in Jesus as her Lord and Savior and now, after 88 years, 10 months, and 15 days on earth, lives with him in heaven. She joins her husband of 69 years for their first Christmas together in heaven. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 27, at Roseland Reformed Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 26, at the church and one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to the Billy Graham Evangelicalistic Association or the American Heart Association. Arrangements are with Tri-County Funeral Home in Prinsburg. Katie was born in Rheiderland Township to Nan and Jennie (Brouwer) Fokken. She attended country school near her home. On August 9, 1944, she was united in marriage to Harvey Hoekstra at the Bunde Christian Reformed Church. Following their marriage she became a member of the Roseland Reformed Church where she was actively involved in the life of the church. Katie was a housewife, mother, and a whole lot more, as she often helped families with small children when Harvey and Katie were first married. From 1974-1994, she worked for Kandiyohi County as a home health aide. In recent years, she and Harvey were actively involved in Friendship Bible Study, worked at the New 2 You Thrift Store, and enjoyed visiting area nursing home residents. They enjoyed meeting people at community suppers and senior pontoon trips. They also enjoyed traveling, and taking camping trips with Katie's sisters. Harvey and Katie moved to Willmar in October 2008. She enjoyed time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren when they stopped by to visit and share a song, talent, or hug. Katie is survived by her six children: Janet (and Roger) Dykstra of Grand Rapids, MI, Dennis (and Sharon) Hoekstra of Manchester, CT, Larry (and Marcia) of Hull, IA, Robert (and Cathy) of Hastings, MN, Marlys Mathiowetz of Redwood Falls, MN, and Darrell (and Gail) of Willmar, MN; 16 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters: Mildred (and John) Meyer, Doris (and Don) Marcus, and two sisters-in-law Ann DeJong, and Henrietta Hoekstra; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey, four siblings: Grace, Egbert, Henry, and Henry; and a grandson: David Mathiowetz.
