Dorothy Slagter Obituary

Dorothy Marie Slagter, age 92, of Willmar and formerly of Prinsburg, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, October 1, at her residence.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, at the Unity Christian Reformed Church in Prinsburg.  Interment will be at Holland Township Cemetery.  Arrangements are with the Tri-County Funeral Home in Prinsburg.  www.tricountyfuneral.com.

Dorothy was born on November 13, 1931, the oldest of four children, to Alexander (Sam) and Henrietta (Sweirenga) Breems.  Dorothy grew up in the Prinsburg community, attending Central Minnesota Christian School and graduated from Clara City High School. Shortly after graduation, she began her career at Clara City Variety Supply where she worked as a single career girl for several years. During those years she enjoyed travelling with girlfriends, notably a sweeping tour of the Colorado parks and California coast as well as other travels to points of interest in northern Minnesota.  In due time a certain dashing young Navy man returned home from service.  Dorothy and Thorval Slagter were wed on January 23rd, 1955, a blessed union until his death in February of 2007.  While raising their family, Dorothy enjoyed a long career at Prinsburg State Bank where she became the "glue" in all processes from teller work to bookkeeping.  Everyone in town knew Dorothy and could count on her for a smile while business was conducted.

Dorothy was actively involved in several churches throughout her life, including First Christian Reformed Church and Unity Christian Reformed Church in Prinsburg, as well as Northminister Presbyterian Church in Tucson, AZ. Her faith was also expressed through her love for music, playing the organ at church and continuing to play hymns at home.

Dorothy's hobbies included long walks, biking, working puzzles, team quilting, and enjoying visits with friends and neighbors.  She was known to light up with a smile at any opportunity to chat!

Dorothy is survived by her loving children, Monica (Larry) Bandstra, Sheryl (Kevin) Strang, and Robert (Lixin) Slagter; sister, Mardi (Tom) MacNally; brother, Charles (Barb) Breems; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alexander and Henrietta Breems, and her brother, Lowell and his wife, Mary Jane Breems.
