Don was born on Nov. 3, 1936, in Prinsburg, Minnesota, the son of Dick D. and Cornelia (Dangermond) Marcus. He grew up in Prinsburg, attended CMCS through 10th grade, graduated from Clara City High School in 1954, and then briefly attended Calvin College. From 1956 to 1958, Don served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. On May 23, 1958, Don was united in marriage to Doris Fokken, and they made their home in the Prinsburg community.
Don owned and operated (along with his brothers) Marcus Well Company for more than 30 years. He was a lifelong member of First Christian Reformed Church and served as an usher, deacon and elder. His volunteer activities were extensive and far reaching within the community, and they included the Prinsburg Fire Department, Prinsburg First Responders (where he was a charter member), Prinsburg Veterans Memorial Committee, Tri-County Burial Association and board member of the local UHF Antenna Association.
When the kids were younger, Don enjoyed photography and camping. When the kids were finally out of the little hair he had left, he found his passion out at ‘paradise’ where he enjoyed nothing more than working to restore the farmhouse, mowing the vast lawn and feeding all his cats. During the past 11 years, he and Doris found much joy in sharing their house in town with ‘the cat’ that showed up at their back door one day, demanding to be adopted. The cat loved to curl up in Don’s lap while Don fell asleep trying to solve his Sudoku puzzles - and watching Andy Griffith at full volume.
He is survived by his loving wife, Doris; four daughters, Kristine (and Jos) Melse of Staples, Colleen (and Don) Van Maanen of Lynden, WA, Carol (and Pete) Zwiers of Prince George, B.C., and Peggy (and David) Boxum of Eden Prairie; six grandchildren (Michael, Courtney, Robin, Paige, Autumn and Anna); and five great-grandchildren (Gerrit, Theo, Felix, Ellie and Leon), and one other great-granddaughter coming this May. Also surviving are three siblings, Abe (and Doris) Marcus of Escondido, CA, Marcia Talsma of Jenison, MI, and Cordell (and Sharon) Marcus of Prinsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Rich and Stan Marcus.
